Poverty is malnourishment. Poverty is homelessness. Poverty is inability to access medical care. Poverty is lack of an informed mind, lack of basic general knowledge and basic literacy skills. Poverty is lack of savings and inaccessibility to credit…living from hand to mouth by the day …merely existing, scraping through life, groping for a meaningful co-existence with others, including nature.  Poverty is death of a child from preventable diseases, and of an adult from treatable sicknesses.

 

Poverty is perpetual dependency and indefinite perennial want.  It is unacceptable, it is dehumanising, it takes way one’s selfhood and personhood.  Poverty is multi-faceted, appearing differently from one place to another, and across time. As usual poverty is a situation people always want to escape, a situation truly well-meaning people always want to help the less fortunate out of. 

Poverty is therefore a call to action…for the poor and the wealthy alike, the privileged and underprivileged…a call to help change lives, an opportunity to change somebody’s life so that someone can have enough to eat, so that a family can have adequate shelter, that some child can access education and health, so some woman can be protected from violence, and everyone could play their part in Community Driven Development (CDD).
